Oh yeah… Archaeology.
I haven’t spoken about archaeology much recently as it’s been all systems go, jumping from one site to another.
Not everything has been fantastic - as the top left picture demonstrates you can turn up a lot of crap. That was from a short project in Bury St Edmunds that turned up nothing that wasn’t modern. But hey, finding stuff is always good (and I imagine finding stuff from the last hundred years is what American archaeologists specialise in? …I kid!!!).
However, top right and bottom left are from an ongoing project at a place called Hitichin, only a kilometre away from an Iron Age Hillfort. Top right is of various slots put through a mass of rubbish pits and bottom left is just a pretty picture I took. It’s a shame I didn’t think to take a snap of the many post-holes we have, we had so many we don’t know which belong to different buildings. Even more bizarre, the sherds of pottery found in some of the post-holes range from Late Bronze Age to Late Iron Age… so only about 2000 years difference. Personally I think someone’s got their dating a bit wrong, but who am I as humble field archaeologist to argue?
Final picture is of a site in school grounds in London. I haven’t done much urban archaeology so it was a nice change. In this small area we produced two medieval pits (at the back); 18th/19th century service pipes; and a WWII air raid shelter. We were also a 5min walk from KFC which is always a result.
Unfortunately I have no ground breaking finds to speak of, but hope springs eternal!

Brilliant!
How long before someone does a PhD on this? I mean, people have just got to keep flogging Pompeii for all its worth.
Oh, I went there.
